Senator Cleave Simpson Named 2026 Legislator of the Year at EDIE Awards
Rural leadership on water, housing and small business policy earns recognition
CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. — September 24, 2026 — The Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC) named Senator Cleave Simpson a 2026 Legislator of the Year at the EDIE Awards during the Drive|Lead|Succeed Conference in Cripple Creek. Senator Matt Ball also received the 2026 Legislator of the Year award. This year’s awards hold special significance as EDCC celebrates its 50th anniversary, honoring major milestones and spotlighting the visionary programs that keep Colorado’s economy thriving and resilient for the future.
A fourth-generation farmer and rancher and general manager of the Rio Grande Water Conservation District, Simpson brings direct experience with the issues shaping rural economies. His work has emphasized agricultural water rights, rural infrastructure and the long-term strength of communities in Southern Colorado.
Simpson sponsored legislation addressing affordable home ownership and administrative burdens for businesses, agricultural operations and local governments. As Senate Minority Leader, he serves on the Senate Finance Committee, the Executive Committee and the Legislative Council Committee, bringing a rural perspective to statewide budget and policy discussions.
His previous service as chair of the Adams State University Board of Trustees reflects a sustained commitment to higher education and regional opportunity.
“Senator Simpson brings firsthand understanding of the people and resources that sustain rural Colorado,” said Tyler Purvis, EDCC’s 2026 Board Chair. “His work on water, housing and practical policy makes him a strong advocate for the communities he serves.”
