City of Thornton Honored with Large Community of the Year Award at EDCC’s 2025 EDIE Awards
Pueblo, CO — October 28, 2025 — The Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC) presented the Large Community of the Year Award to the City of Thornton during its annual Drive|Lead|Succeed Conference in Pueblo. The EDIE Awards recognize excellence in economic development and celebrate leaders and communities shaping Colorado’s economic future.
The City of Thornton was recognized for its strategic growth, thoughtful development, and strong support for local businesses. The city has executed a major Powerhouse Expansion, transforming a key corridor into a destination with significant attractions and major corporate employers. Thornton’s community-based planning ensures that redevelopment projects reflect citizen values while fueling rapid economic growth.
Thornton also provides robust small business support through its dedicated Small Business Task Force, which removes permitting and licensing barriers and offers mentorship, resources, and space for underserved entrepreneurs — including those with language barriers. These efforts ensure that all local businesses have the tools to thrive.
The city’s economic development team is widely regarded as a “gold standard” for public service and collaboration. Thornton leaders actively mentor other economic development offices across Colorado, sharing best practices in incentives, retail attraction, and small business support, while maintaining deep involvement in EDCC boards and committees — demonstrating that the success of one community strengthens the entire state.
“Thornton’s comprehensive approach to growth and inclusivity sets a benchmark for communities across Colorado,” said Shannon Hein, EDCC Secretary and nominator. “Their leadership reflects what’s possible when a city commits to both economic expansion and community connection.”
“The City of Thornton exemplifies collaboration at every level — from revitalizing key corridors to championing small businesses and entrepreneurs,” said Kim Woodworth, EDCC Executive Director. “Their success is a powerful reminder that intentional, people-centered economic development builds stronger, more resilient communities statewide.”
Hosted annually by EDCC, the EDIE Awards honor the people, programs, and partnerships that exemplify innovation, collaboration, and impact in economic development across Colorado.
