The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition of 10 contests that challenge student teams to design and build full-size, energy-efficient, solar-powered, sustainable houses. The winner most successfully blends design excellence, smart energy strategies, innovation, and market potential. Free to visitors, October 5 – 9 and 12 – 15, 2017, at the 61st & Peña commuter rail station near Denver, Colorado’s International Airport, the event features a sustainability expo and professional, consumer, and middle school education events. Since the first Solar Decathlon was held in Washington, D.C., in 2002, the competition has expanded to Africa, China, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East to involve more than 200 teams and 35,000 collegiate participants worldwide.
Solar Decathlon provides unique hands-on experience and training that prepares competing students to enter the clean energy workforce. The competition creates awareness about more efficient technologies for homes and buildings for the visiting public. And, technologies and solutions used in Solar Decathlon houses have advanced the residential building industry both in the United States and abroad.
